Renowned tourist resort in the province of Grosseto, Punta Ala was originally called “Punta
Troia”. The current name is due to Italo Balbo, the well-known aviator, who owned several
villas in this area.
The recent settlement is dominated by the size of Castello Balbo, also known as Forte di
Punta Ala, which is located on top of the promontory of Capo Troia. The castle was built in
the second half of the 16th century by order of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, in order to
defend themselves from the Turkish raids.
The castle offers a spectacular view of the Gulf of Follonica, the port and some
curious-shaped outcrops of rocks, such as the so-called “Porcellini” and the “Sparviero”.
Another particularly interesting sight is the Hidalgo Tower, also known as Torre del Barbiere, built by Piombino Princedom in 1577 as a coastal lookout area. Punta Ala is also known for the important religious architecture such as the Chapel of Sant’Antonio and the Church of Signora della Consolata, the latter built in modern style in 1961 and designed by the architects Piemontese and Di Salvo.
With its breathtaking views and the many restaurants, shops, elegant and luxurious beach
and hotel facilities, Punta Ala stands out above all as an exclusive destination for elite
Every year, it attracts large numbers of tourists visiting the long coastline of fine, golden
beaches, enlivened by splendid coves and surrounded by the typical Mediterranean
vegetation and large pine forests. The welcoming and well-equipped beaches also make
Punta Ala the ideal destination for families with children and for those who want to enjoy a
totally relaxing holiday.
Punta Ala is also perfect for fans of niche sports such as golf. The town has one of the
largest golf courses in the whole county, Golf Club Punta Alta.
Moreover, Punta Ala is famous for its sailing tradition and for its excellent tourist port, which in the past also housed Luna Rossa, the historic boat involved in the 2000 America’s Cup regattas.
Its strategic position and the ease with which it can be reached means that Punta Ala is an
excellent starting point for those who want to explore the entire Maremma coast.
