St. Guglielmo's hermitage

St. Guglielmo's hermitage

The monastery stands on the tomb of St. William.
What remains is an architectural framework that covers a large surface area and is located
within a thick forest. This mystical place can not be visited, but is only visible from the
outside, walking towards the cape.
Despite the fact that the time spent in this place by this saint was very limited, several
miracles and legends are related to the life of San Guglielmo in Castiglione della Pescaia.
Until his death on February 10th in 1157 he lived here, first alone and then with his disciple
Alberto, to which a second companion by the name of Rinaldo was added not long before
his death.
His lifestyle was simple and strict, he fasted tirelessly, eating raw herbs, water and bread
which was brought to him from time to time by some of Buriano’s devotees. Only three times a week he ate a hot dish and some watered-down wine.
